Pokemon Go! Don’t miss this golden opportunity for Evangelisation.

Pokemon Go! is already proving to be one of the biggest downloadable games ever produced. Servers all over the world are completely jammed by millions of people trying to get this game to download onto their mobile phones. People are going crazy for it! My kids absolutely love it.

For those who don’t know already, the game is to chase and collect Pokemon characters that are digitally present all over your neighborhood. The game uses real life landmarks as part of the game that allows players to meet up, have Pokemon battles and trade characters.

Many of these real life landmarks are Churches. So as you can imagine, many people – often kids or teenagers – are suddenly appearing on Church property in large numbers.

As far as I can tell, this is probably the biggest opportunity for evangelisation that has landed in the lap of Churches all across the land. People who would *never* usually have any reason to set foot on church property are flocking there in drones! If I was a priest I would be downloading the game onto my phone right now – just so I would have an excuse to go outside and interact with the swarms of young people that were literally on my door step.

Unfortunately, it seems some people have missed this gift from God and instead have retreated into grumpiness – actually telling young visitors to *GO AWAY* and that they are not welcome on church property!

Unbelievable!!! This notice was put up on the grounds of a Catholic church.

And another one…

Please!!! Don’t you get it?! These kids aren’t there to cause any trouble. And tell me this – when will you ever get an opportunity to speak to these kids again?

How about something like this instead?:

Church featured in Pokemon Go expecting deluge of gamers

And if you are still huffing and puffing in your fuddy-duddy grumpy old person way, let you forget that in 2000, St. Pope John Paul II gave his blessing to the Pokémon franchise, saying the games did not have “any harmful moral side effects” and were based on “ties of intense friendship”.

C’mon guys what’s wrong with you?! Don’t miss this golden opportunity. Love them for goodness sake. Instead of seeing these kids as intruders, perhaps start seeing them as irreplaceable souls made in the image and likeness of God who will spend eternity somewhere one day. Perhaps this is your one chance to make sure that place is heaven.

  1. Please remember that Satan appears as an angel of light. Temptation is never presented as an evil. but always as something enticing (the tree of knowledge of good and evil), in the end the fruit will always tell you what the source is. Getting people to go to churches is one thing, getting them identified with Christ is something else. People have a habit of ‘chasing’ the latest fashions, but fashions come and go, whereas God’s word never changes. Somehow I don’t see Pokemon as the answer to evangelisation somehow.

    • Pokemon:What is it?(the occult behind this game!!)
      by Matt Slick
Update 7/16/2016: The original CARM article on Pokémon was written in 2007. Recently, Pokémon has experienced a resurgence. In fact, it is now the number one viewed article on CARM. My daughter who, I just found out, plays Pokemon Go, told me it’s fun and that there are no occultic overtones associated with it. So, downloaded the mobile phone app version of Pokémon and my daughter and I played it for 1/2 hour. So far, nothing occultic has surfaced in the new version. I’m going to continue my research.

Gerry, I read the article written by Matt Slick about Pokemon. Try to find the article, it explains the occult behind this game. I posted the whole article here yesterday, but it’s not published -it must have been too long o:) Riki

      • CARM aren’t catholic. They are protestants. They are anti-catholic too.
University of Waterloo religious studies assistant professor Douglas E. Cowan states “Like the Countercult in print, the Countercult on the Net is a carefully managed presentation of selected truths, half-truths, spun truths, and untruths.

In her book Voices of Diversity: Multi-Culturalism in America, Mary C. Sengstock, a sociologist from Wayne State University, describes the CARM website as one of those continuing a tradition of religious prejudice, because it puts forward the view that Roman Catholics are not Christians !

So why would you believe that website if it says that we catholics aren’t even Christians ?

      • And how Christian are most catholics nowadays !!! I see and hear enough around me daily !!! Catholics don’t open their mouth to defend our Savior, as one of my colleagues (a catholic) used to say : Oh but we here in America we do whatever we want, we don’t listen to Rome, we do our own thing !!!
Sorry guy, I’ve seen and heard enough in my life to just accept your answer ?? !!
o:( Riki and please in Jesus’ Name : don’t start arguing

        • Well I prefer to believe the Pope, who is catholic. I’m not arguing. I’m informing you on the low credibility of your source. I prefer to evangelise rather than believe unfounded claims. thank you very much as this is a great opportunity for the church, catholic church of course. Protestant fundamentalist claims aren’t worth much for me.

  2. I prefer to listen to Saint Pope John Paul II rather than protestant warnings (which is where the scare had originated) indeed. Yes it is a great means of evangelisation. You can talk to people who you see. Too many people these days are scared of opening up a conversation with someone they see.

      Penance Penance Penance
      to avoid Divine vengeance
      for not showing any remorse
and trying our will to enforce
The reign of the Impostor has arrived
the Church, of TRUTH is being deprived
the whole world hangs on his lips
while being readied for a total eclipse
      The true followers of Christ
trying to pull off the heist
      are persecuted for non-compliance
      and being countered with defiance
When it will seem that all is lost
      everything sacred has been tossed
God will deliver us from our agony
and reign forever in all His Majesty

The Ship of Peter is torn apart
      Martyred in its Holy Teaching
It sinks and sinks, no work of art
      The bottom though never reaching
      Dissidents are screaming loud
      Leaving behind an awful niff
      Pretending to be proudly stout
Gearing the Ship into a cliff
      Jesus shows His wounded Heart
      Smitten with a deadly dart
      Peter the Rock in desolation
      Deploring severe desecration
      Wake up, you Christian Brother
      Show now your truthful face
      With Mary our Heavenly Mother
      We’ll reach that Peaceful Place
In allegiance to the Holy Father
      United in prayer and fasting
No victory will claim, but rather
      Satan’s defeat be everlasting.

  3. Thanks for this post, you make me think and learn. Yes it would be great to welcome these young people with Christian warmth and hospitality! And treat them as unique human beings we’d like to see again. What’s with the “fuddy duddy grumpy old person” comment though? There are old people who deal with more change in a dignified way than the rest of us could cope with without throwing our toys out of the pram. And there are young people who are very stuck in old ideas and won’t change. We will mostly all be old one day and find out what it’s like to hear these tired old stereotypes that put us in a narrow box instead of seeing us as a unique human person with dignity. Let’s start changing that too!
